What Your Money Buys

Concrete Things, Concrete Costs

Every line below is something we actually purchase, at a price we actually pay.

CauseA contribution buysOngoing need
Gurukul Education Books, slate, notebooks and stationery for one child for a term; uniform and warm clothing; a share of boarding and meals. Teachers’ salaries and kitchen provisions — the costs that recur every month whether or not a donor is watching.
Health & Eye Camps Screening and spectacles for elders at a free camp; medicines dispensed on the day; transport for the medical team. Referral surgery for cataract cases, and the follow-up calls that make sure a referral was actually acted on.
Cow Seva / Gaushala Green and dry fodder for one cow for a month; veterinary treatment; bedding and shelter repair. Feed prices spike in summer and after a poor monsoon — precisely when animals need the most.
Ayurveda & Naturopathy Herbal preparations, therapy consumables and consultation for patients who cannot pay; medicinal garden upkeep. Trained therapists, and the documentation work that turns treatment into a record.
Old Age Home Meals, medicines and daily care for one resident; blankets and winter clothing. Night staff and the unglamorous business of being present at three in the morning.
Kirtan, Katha & Bhandara A bhandara meal for around a hundred sadhus, elders and families; provisions and fuel for the kitchen. Support for widows and ageing sadhus in Vrindavan who appear on no official list.

Choose a Cause and Give Give Time Instead

Not Sure Which to Choose?

Most people pick the cause that touches something in their own life — a parent who went blind, a child who nearly did not finish school, a cow their grandmother kept. That is a perfectly good way to decide, and we would not talk anyone out of it.

If you have no such attachment, two practical suggestions. Give monthly rather than once. A child’s schooling and a cow’s feed are monthly obligations; predictable income is what lets us commit to six years instead of one.

Or let us decide. Tell us to put it where the need is sharpest and we will — usually into the least popular cause, because fodder and night staff attract far fewer donors than children do, and they still have to be paid for.
