What Each Value Commits Us To
A value that does not change a decision is decoration. Here is what ours oblige us to do.
Compassion
Means: nobody is asked to prove they are poor enough, or the right religion, or sufficiently grateful, before being served.
Costs us: we cannot produce tidy eligibility statistics, and we occasionally help someone who could have managed without us. We consider that the cheaper mistake.
Integrity
Means: contributions are recorded against the programme they were given for and spent on it. Anyone who asks where their money went gets an answer.
Costs us: we cannot quietly move a surplus from a popular cause to an unpopular one, however tempting.
Collaboration
Means: we work through local schools, temples, panchayats, doctors and partner hospitals rather than parachuting in with our own banner.
Costs us: slower work, shared credit, and depending on people we do not control. Worth it.
Empowerment
Means: the aim is that a family stops needing us — a child qualified, an elder well, a household able to keep its own cow.
Costs us: success looks like a shrinking caseload, which is a difficult thing to put in a fundraising appeal.
What We Are Working Towards
Deliberately modest, because we would rather do these properly than announce more.
Deepen the Gurukul rather than duplicate it. Better teaching, better bridge support for children who arrive behind, and proper follow-through after students leave — before we consider a second campus.
Make the Ayurveda centre a genuine record. Formulations, plants and outcomes documented consistently enough to be of use to someone other than us.
Take the gaushala to full self-sufficiency in fodder where land and season allow, so that a bad summer does not become a crisis.
Turn camps into continuity. Every registered patient followed up, every referral checked — because the referral is where people are usually lost.
Build a base of monthly donors. Predictable income is what lets us promise a child six years of schooling instead of one.
