Our Gurukul — A Living Campus
At the heart of Hritan Foundation is our Gurukul: a residential learning campus where education is not confined to a classroom. Alongside academics, students grow up surrounded by the practices that shape character — caring for cows, learning the principles of Ayurveda, daily yoga, and the quiet discipline of temple life. It is an integrated model in which study, service, health and spirituality support one another.
Gaushala
A cow shed within the Gurukul grounds. Students take part in daily cow seva — feeding, grooming and care — learning compassion and responsibility first-hand.
Ayurveda Centre
A working Ayurveda centre on campus where traditional treatments are practised and, alongside them, research is carried out into classical formulations and herbal medicine.
Temple
Our Gurukul temple anchors the daily rhythm of the campus, with prayer, kirtan and festival observances that keep students connected to their cultural roots.
Yoga
Yoga and pranayama are part of everyday life at the Gurukul, building physical strength, steadiness of mind and lifelong habits of wellbeing.
Ayurveda Practice and Research at the Gurukul
Our Ayurveda centre inside the Gurukul is both a place of treatment and a place of study. Practitioners offer consultations and therapies rooted in classical Ayurvedic tradition, while our research work documents traditional remedies, studies medicinal plants grown on the campus, and examines how time-tested practices can serve modern community health needs. A Day at the Gurukul
The timetable is the curriculum. What a child does every day is what a child becomes.
Before dawn
Waking, washing, and morning prayer at the temple. Then yoga and pranayama on the open ground — the same sequence every day, until it belongs to them.
Morning
Academic classes: Hindi, English, Sanskrit, mathematics, science and social studies, taught to the standard any school would recognise. Breakfast is taken together.
Afternoon
Seva duties on a rota — the gaushala, the medicinal garden, the kitchen, the grounds. Every child does every job. Nobody is exempt and nobody is singled out.
Evening
Supervised study, then kirtan or storytelling at the temple, then lights out. Older students help younger ones with what they could not follow in class.
What We Teach, and Why in This Order
The academic syllabus is not negotiable. A child who leaves us must be able to compete for a place, a job and a fair wage, and that means real mathematics, real science and real command of English and Hindi. Sentiment about tradition is no substitute for literacy.
Sanskrit is taught because it unlocks the texts the rest of the campus lives by, and because it is a rigorous grammatical training in its own right.
What surrounds the syllabus is the part that is hard to timetable. A child who has fed a cow every morning for six years has a different relationship with living things than one who has read about compassion. A child who has swept the floor he eats off does not grow up assuming somebody else exists to clean up after him. These are not extras. They are the reason the campus is arranged the way it is.
Who Comes to Us
Our students come from families for whom schooling is a genuine financial impossibility — daily-wage households, families that have lost an earning parent, children who had already been pulled out of school and put to work.
Admission is on need, not on marks. A child who has never held a pencil is exactly the child we exist for. New entrants who are behind receive bridge teaching until they can follow their year group, and nobody is made to feel slow for needing it.
Boarding, meals, books, uniform and medical care are provided at no cost. We do not charge fees, and we do not ask families for “voluntary” contributions afterwards. A family that has to weigh school against food will always choose food, and they should not have to.

The Gurukul — Your Questions
Is this instead of ordinary school, or as well as?
Instead of, and it is a full academic education. Students study languages, mathematics, science and social studies to a standard that lets them continue into mainstream secondary and higher education. The Gurukul framing describes how they live, not a narrowing of what they learn.
How do I apply for admission?
Contact us on +91 98111 40431 or info@hritanfoundation.com. We will talk to the family, understand the circumstances, and tell you honestly whether we have a place. Places are limited by what we can fund properly.
Are there really no fees or hidden costs?
None. Boarding, meals, books, uniform and medical care are all covered. We do not levy examination fees, building funds or any of the other charges that quietly price poor children out of free schools.
Do you admit girls?
Yes. Girls are frequently the first to be withdrawn from school when a family is under pressure, which is precisely why they need a place that costs the family nothing.
Is cow seva compulsory for students?
Seva duties are part of the daily rota and every student takes a turn, in the gaushala as in the kitchen and the garden. It is supervised, age-appropriate, and never allowed to displace class time.
What happens to students after they leave?
They go on to further schooling, vocational training or work, and we help with admissions and references where we can. We would rather stay in touch with a hundred former students properly than lose track of a thousand.
Can I sponsor a specific child?
You can sponsor a place. We do not publish children’s names, photographs or circumstances to donors — their privacy is not ours to trade. You will receive an account of what your contribution funded.
Can I visit the campus?
Yes, by prior arrangement so that classes are not disrupted. We would much rather you came and looked than took our word for any of this.
